Junior first aid – children saving lives

Having been to a few of Child Matters Junior First Aid classes with my own daughter it always amazes me how wonderfully engaged and eager to learn the young kids are. Claire has taught over 300 children this summer alone in schools, clubs and public events. And as a first hand witness, I can say, they absolutely LOVE it!

SUMMER HOLIDAY FUN AT JUNIOR FIRST AID CLASS

The summer holidays are a great time for Junior First Aid classes as the children’s minds are freshly charged from being away from school and completely focused. They can’t wait to bandage their friends and lovingly put their siblings into the recovery position (well…almost lovingly). They love answering questions and unlike the adult classes a sea of eager hands are up in the air for every single question, all wanting to take part in CPR and share their own personal stories of when mummy was poorly or they fell in the playground.

But what really impressed me was in this particular class in July was that two young girls took an AED defibrillator out and pretended to use it on a poorly patient. They were brilliant! From phoning for help, to attaching the pads and telling everyone to stand back. Definitely the next generation of first aiders, if not future nurses and doctors.

So if there is an emergency at home or at school I know that these little people with know how to call for help, get emergency services, check if someone is breathing and even give chest compressions until the ambulance arrives.

Together, lets spread this enthusiasm and get all children trained to give basic first aid and the joy of helping others.

Here’s what your child will learn in a Junior First Aid Class:-

FLAT STAN FUN FOR KIDS AGED 4-10 YEARS

Flat Stan manikins and Flat Stan workshops are perfect for EYFS and Key Stages 1-4 and works well with the school curriculum. The kids take away an achievement pack, first aid book, certificate and sticker. But most importantly they take away a skill for life. They’ll learn:-

How to stay safe and avoid accidents & how to help save lives:

  • When to summon help
  • Checking if someone is breathing
  • Delivering chest compressions
  • How to help someone who is choking, bleeding or have suffered a burn

AND OF COURSE, THE ALL IMPORTANT DRAB

  • Danger – learning to how keep themselves out of danger as a priority.
  • Response– checking to see if their friend is able to talk or move by tapping their collarbone and asking them if they are ok.
  • Airway– checking to see if their friend or parent has any object blocking their mouth that can be easily removed. If they are choking they can learn how to give back slaps and abdominal thrusts to remove the object.
  • Breathing– knowing how to listen and feel for breathing. If the person is breathing they can put them into the recovery position.

CALLING FOR HELP

As well as this, parents we can help too by leaving an Emergency Contacts Sheet visible in the home. Your son or daughter can then easily find mummy and daddy’s phone number and their own home address to tell the emergency services when they dial 999.

STAYING SAFE

If your child is out and about and has an accident themselves, memorising their own address and telephone number is sure way to get help faster. You can be contacted quicker to provide lifesaving information on your child’s medical condition such as epilepsy and allergies. And it goes without saying that your child should be aware of their own medical conditions themselves.

I loved learning first aid. It was fun to practice on my friends and I know how to get help if my nanny needs it. The choking vest made me laugh because a wotzit popped out when I pushed on the girls tummy. I’ve only got diddy hands but I did it! Cerys Morgan, aged 6

HOW DO I JOIN A JUNIOR FIRST AID CLASS?

A staggering seven in ten adults lack the knowledge and confidence to act if someone collapsed and was unresponsive and not breathing. Come on parents, let’s create a generation of lifesavers and get your children on a first aid course!

Child Matters run regular Junior First Aid classes in every school holiday so check out our Facebook page for upcoming dates. They can also be run in school timetables, after school, in wrap around care, holiday clubs or at a private venue as a social event in the school holidays. We can tailor private classes to your timings, number of children and schedule. If your staff are trained by us, then you can even have a FREE Junior First Aid class for up to 30 pupils.
