An Interview with Alexis Gray from The Happy Childcare Company
“I know it sounds a bit full on but I’m passionate about everyone being happy with childcare – early years practitioners, nurseries, children and parents.”
Alexis Gray has been a self-employed working mum for 10 years. With children in nurseries from an early age, she was sometimes disappointed by the temporary workers the nurseries had looking after the kids and began to look into finding out why. A combination of a shortage of qualified staff, poor pay and inflexible working practices for working mothers all contributed. To try and help solve these issues, she founded The Happy Childcare Company, a nursery recruitment and supply business based in South Buckinghamshire.
Trying to ensure that nursery nurses get paid £10 per hour for the most important job in the world – helping our children develop and thrive.

Never having enough time to do all the things I want to get done!
I take my girls to the supermarket. When they were really little it was more about riding in the trolley and naming particular foods but now we talk about value for money, mass, totting up prices, where and how food is grown/made… And I get my weekly shopping done!
Shaking a bottle of ketchup in a restaurant without checking the lid was screwed on properly. Let’s just say that I wasn’t the only one in the place who had to go home and shower and change!
I’d love to time travel (with toothpaste, toilet paper and antibiotics!).
