Did you know that in 2019 heart attacks were the biggest cause of mortality in women? Many of which could have been avoided. The symptoms often present differently in women compared to men so often go unnoticed. But the other more concerning issue is that people are afraid to remove a bra or expose a womens breast in order to save their life. And the bra does need to be removed to use an AED defibrillator effectively.

Using lifesaving techniques such as CPR or an AED defibrillator during a cardiac arrest (where the heart stops completely) could help save a life before emergency services.

The shocking truth of the situation

27% – That’s how less likely women are to have CPR done on them, as compared to men

15% – That’s how less likely women are to survive safe use of an AED, as compared to men

30,000 – The number of Annual UK Out Of Hospital cardiac arrests (where resuscitation is attempted) with less than a 10% survival rate

Members of the public are often too afraid or embarrassed to expose, touch or remove a bra from a female.

So to all you men and women out there, please help us to spread the word that it’s totally OK to remove a bra in the event of a cardiac arrest when using a defibrillator or giving lifesaving compressions to a women.

Why remove the bra?

The underwire in our bras can actually take the shock away from the heart and arch over the body, rather than through it.

For any one who still isn’t sold about consent in removing someone’s bra, this action is protected under the SARAH (Social Action, Responsible and Heroism) Act 2015. 

This is why we are supporting the #BraOffDefibOn campaign to help normalise the taboo of removing the bra and exposing our boobs during these potentially lifesaving circumstances.
